So You Think You Want to Buy a Siamese Kitten!

Kittens are one of the most wonderful living creatures known to man. They are cute, playful, innocent and so full of love and energy. Anyone with a kitten who owns “their person” has a treasure indeed. If you travel or are not home for long and frequent periods of time, you may wish to re-think the idea of getting a Siamese kitten. Siamese cats are like dogs in many ways…they want and need human companionship.

With the privilege of taking a kitten as a member of your family comes the responsibility of taking care of this seemingly helpless little four-legged person wearing a fur coat. At first, a new family can expect a little confusion from the kitten. After all, his or her brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, and most importantly, their mother is no longer there to offer support and that occasional snack at “Mom’s Diner.” Crying, hiding and not eating are the most frequent problems of a kitten entering a new home. All of these problems generally go away within the first 7 to ten days.

I have found that Siamese kittens just want to be close to a living body. By the time you get your kitten, it should be socialized to people and be perfectly happy in your lap until it sees something that looks more interesting…and, fortunately Siamese are very curious little creatures. Avoid leaving the kitten alone and try introducing it to your household during a weekend or a week when you will be home and can answer each time the kitten cries. Most of the time, an answer to its cry is all a Siamese kitten is looking for.

It is recommended that once a kitten joins your family, it should visit your vet within the first 2 or 3 days for a check up and to get to know that dreadful person called a “vet.” Kittens come with a health certificate, but there is nothing that makes a new family feel more at ease than to have their own vet say, “This kitten looks fine to me!” Kittens also come with all vaccinations, (excluding rabies since this vaccination can only be given at 6 months of age) and are usually spayed or neutered prior to making a move from “Mom’s home” to their very own castle where they will reign as prince or princess! Female kittens should not be spayed until 5 months of age. A refundable deposit of $150 is required of all female kittens leaving home prior to this age. Your kitten promises to insure their former “mom” returns it when they have had their “operation.” Their registration form is also retained until their operation is performed. Pedigree is provided at the time a kitten ex changes homes.

Kittens are happier and healthier pets when spayed or neutered. My goal in providing purebred Siamese kittens is to insure new owners of a loving, happy, and healthy kitten. With each kitten I will provide all the necessary information regarding their preferred cuisine, and their preferred litter.

Siamese kittens are active and are constantly looking things over…in short; they are always getting into things they should not be getting into. If you have plants, please look over the list of plants on my “Links” page that are not cat-friendly—some can even cause a cat to become very sick or die. A good supply of toys will keep most kittens occupied. Most Siamese cats are excellent retrievers and if you have the patience, it is very easy to train a Siamese to fetch! They don’t do it to impress you or the family dog…they do it because they enjoy watching your expressions! I can guarantee that once a Siamese teaches you the game of fetch, you will grow tired of it before your Siamese does. A basket to place all the favorite toys in each night is a good way to keep track of “play times.” Cats do have their favorite toys for the day…and they do change as the days pass. A basket will allow them to pick their favorite toy for that particular day…otherwise, you will find toys ev erywhere in your house and forever be digging them out of the vacuum cleaner. If you allow your Siamese to sleep with you, expect to find toys in your bed that were in the basket when you all retired for the night. Siamese cats do enjoy having their favorite toys right there with them even when they are sleeping.

Socialization Siamese are wonderful, intelligent and loyal friends…most people must keep a Siamese cat around once they introduce them to their household. My personal recommendation is to buy two kittens together…they will entertain you for hours at a time and will give you twice as much love and enjoyment. I have successfully placed one kitten in homes, but two kittens can bring twice as much joy and loneliness is never an issue.

I recommend yearly “Wellness” visits to your vet. This will allow her or him to evaluate your kitten frequently to catch any problems that may cause harm to them and cut their natural life short. Just like anything else, we have to maintain the health of this tiny kitten that will grow starting the day after it arrives.

I will always be available to answer questions regarding your kitten. I want your experience with your Siamese kitten to be a wonderful experience and I want to also know that this special little creature is happy and doing well.
